Gold Tracker vs BullionVault: Physical stacking vs vaulted bullion

Two very different approaches to owning precious metals

BullionVault is the world's largest online investment gold service, run by Galmarley Ltd and a full member of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). Their iOS app lets you buy and sell allocated gold, silver, platinum, and palladium stored in professional vaults in London, Zurich, New York, Toronto, and Singapore. Trading happens at market rates around the clock, with commissions as low as 0.05%. You can set price alerts, auto-invest on a schedule, and hold bullion in a SIPP or IRA. The tradeoff is simple: the metal stays in the vault, and BullionVault requires an account because your holdings live on their platform.

Gold Tracker is built for physical metal you actually hold. It helps you log each coin, bar, or round with the price you paid, track real-time gain or loss per position, calculate melt values for any karat or purity, and check prices from your watch face or lock screen. Your portfolio stays on your device, syncs through iCloud, and can be locked with Face ID or Touch ID, with no account and no ads.

What Gold Tracker does that BullionVault doesn't

Physical Inventory Tracking

BullionVault is designed for allocated bullion that sits in a professional vault — you own it, but you never hold it. There's no place to log a tube of Silver Eagles, a 1 oz Gold Maple, or a handful of 14K chains. Gold Tracker's Vault is built for that kind of physical inventory. Every purchase is recorded as a separate lot with the exact price, weight, date, and currency. You get average cost per ounce, unrealized gain or loss against the live spot price, and a full lot-level history. If you bought gold in Canadian dollars, euros, or pounds, Gold Tracker tracks the FX gain or loss separately from the metal price movement. When you sell, it records the realized profit.

BullionVault shows you a balance and a current valuation for the bullion in its vaults, but it doesn't give you lot-level cost tracking, multi-currency FX analysis, or the kind of mixed-source portfolio support most collectors end up needing. If you buy from coin shops, eBay, JM Bullion, APMEX, gun shows, and estate sales, Gold Tracker gives you a single, unified view of everything you own.

Melt Value Calculators

BullionVault deals in .9999 fine bars, so a melt value calculator is not a core part of that app. Gold Tracker is made for a broader range of metal. Its melt value calculators handle gold from 8K through 24K, silver at any purity (.925, .999, or custom), plus platinum and palladium. Enter a weight in troy ounces, grams, kilograms, or pennyweights and get the melt value at the current spot price. If you're evaluating jewelry, scrap, or coins with unusual purities, the calculators are the faster fit. Pawn shops, gold buyers, and dealers have relied on them since 2015.

Apple Watch & Widgets

BullionVault has no Apple Watch app, no watch face complications, and no widgets. Gold Tracker has a dedicated Apple Watch app with complications that show your chosen metal's price directly on your watch face. On iPhone, Gold Tracker also offers home screen widgets and lock screen widgets where you choose which metal to display. If you want prices visible at a glance without opening an app or logging into an account, Gold Tracker is the better fit.

Privacy & Local-First Storage

BullionVault is an investment platform. It requires an account with your identity, bank details, and full transaction history, all stored on their servers. That works for a regulated bullion service, but it also means your holdings are visible to BullionVault and tied to your account. Gold Tracker requires no account at all. Your portfolio data is stored locally on your device, and if you enable iCloud sync, Apple encrypts that data in transit and on its servers. You can lock the vault with Face ID or Touch ID. Nobody — not Hearn Apps, not Apple — can see what's in your vault.

For people who keep physical metals because they want privacy and direct control, that difference matters. Gold Tracker keeps the data on your side.

The Vault

Log every coin, bar, and round. Track purchases, sales, and see your real-time gain or loss — per item, per metal, in any currency.

Calculators

Instantly calculate melt values across every karat, purity, and weight unit. A go-to tool for pawn shops, gold buyers, and dealers since 2015.

Watch & Complications

Track your physical stack.
